Umrah — a Shia Perspective

General overview only — to be reviewed by our Aalims for accuracy before publishing

Many of our Australian & New Zealand pilgrims combine their Iraq and Iran ziyarat with an Umrah Mufrada (a standalone Umrah that can be performed at any time of year) in Makkah and Madinah. In broad terms, Umrah involves:

  1. Ihram — entering a state of consecration at the miqat with the niyyah (intention) for Umrah, wearing the prescribed ihram garments.
  2. Tawaf — seven circuits around the Ka'bah, followed by prayer near Maqam Ibrahim.
  3. Sa'i — walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah.
  4. Taqsir — trimming the hair to exit the state of ihram, completing the Umrah.

Pilgrims also commonly visit Masjid an-Nabawi and Jannat al-Baqi in Madinah, resting place of several Imams (a.s.) and other revered figures, along with Masjid-e-Quba — the first mosque built in Islam, established by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w.) himself upon his arrival in Madinah.

Specific rulings, recommended duas and the exact sequence can vary by marja (religious authority). Our accompanying Aalim guides every group through the correct rites step by step — please raise any questions with them directly, or confirm specific rulings with your own marja before travelling.
